Editorial objectives

The Journal of Workplace Learning aims to provide an avenue for the presentation and discussion of research related to the workplace as a site for learning. Its scope encompasses formal, informal and incidental learning in the workplace for individuals, groups and teams, as well as work-based learning, and off-the-job learning for the workplace. This focus on learning in, from and for the workplace also brings with it questions about the nature of interventions that might assist the learning process and of the roles of those responsible directly or indirectly for such interventions. Since workplace learning cannot be considered without reference to its context, another aim of the journal is to explore the organisational, policy, political, resource issues and other factors which influence how, when and why that learning takes place.

Editorial criteria

Contributions are welcomed from academics and researchers, as well as from practitioners and consultants in workplace training and learning, those who supervise or manage the training/learning function, and from workplace learners themselves.

It is expected that articles published in the journal will be based on research, and will incorporate careful presentation of data, and thoughtful analysis and discussion, rather than comprise mere description or synthesis of existing literature, and will also cater for an international audience.

All contributors are encouraged to spell out the practical implications and relevance of their work for those involved in supervising, facilitating or undertaking workplace learning.

Articles will be considered for publication only if they have not been published, submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere.

Recent Special Issues

Employee learning path strategies (Volume 30, Issue 5) -  This special issue on learning path strategies comes during a time of widespread of disruption in corporate, government and non-governmental organizations that reaches across almost every sector of the global economy. In this mix of uncertainty and irony, the 5 papers included here argue that workplace learning is undergoing similar drastic shifts in both its conceptualization and operationalization.

RWL9 work, learning and globalisation: challenges for the 21st century (Volume 29, Issue 7/8) - Guest Editors: Helen Bound, Yew-Jin Lee and Wei-Ying Lim. Articles in this special issue were first presented at the ninth international conference "Research, Working and Learning" (RWL) hosted in Singapore by the Institute for Adult Learning, Singapore University of Social Sciences and the National Institute of Education from 9 to 11 December 2015. The theme welcomed presentations describing how globalisation mediates skills, performance and work; the implications of the changing nature of work for learning through/for work; and the ways in which vocational education and training (VET) policies or systems can be responsive to unpredictable yet rapid global and regional pressures.
